Civil War Spencer Model 1865 Lever Action Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine, #29168, .50 RF cal., 20'' round barrel fitted with a block-blade front sight and dovetailed tall open rear sight (a later replacement); steel receiver is marked at top of breech ''Spencer Repeating Rifle/Pat'd. March 6, 1860/Manuf'd. at Prov. R.I./by Burnside Rifle Co.'' in four lines lengthwise, ''Model/1865'' vertically, and mounted with a steel sling bar and ring on left side; serpentine operating lever, single spring-retained barrel band, carbine buttplate with hinged door opening to tubular magazine that feeds seven cartridges to chamber through buttstock; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock fitted with a sling swivel on belly. Mfg'd ca. 1865-66. Condition is good, the barrel showing overall light rust, the balance of the metal a gunmetal gray with silvered-out case hardening. Stocks with deep scarring, cracks and losses, but sound. Action functions smoothly; 6-groove bore is fairly smooth with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
